Sophie Calle: “Take care of youself”

Museum De Pont, Tilburg

I received an e-mail telling me it was over.

I didn’t know how to respond.

It was almost as if it hadn’t been meant for me.

It ended with the words, “Take care of yourself.”

And so I did.

I asked 107 women, chosen for their profession or skills,

to interpret this letter.

To analyze it, comment on it, dance it, sing it.

Exhaust it. Understand it for me. Answer for me.

It was a way of taking the time to break up.

A way of taking care of myself.

Sophie Calle, a French artist, was dumped by her partner by email. Instead of crying (which she probably did as well) she used her negative energy and made something positive out of it. She asked more than hundred women to read it and form an opinion about it. The result is a project called Take care of yourself.

They have for example a relation therapist, a journalist, a lawyer of woman rights, a teenage girl, a literary reviewer and a curator. All those women, with their different points of view, make a sometimes funny, sometimes cruel and sometimes sensitive collection. They make it hard for you to be at the side of the man who wrote the mail..

You could take a look at it yourself in the (beautiful!) museum De Pont in Tilburg, till may 23rd.
