Are we in control of our own decisions?

February 10, 2010

Why does an aspirine from a well known brand works better then from a cheap brand, even when the pills are identical? Why do we choose, despite the many lectures from our moms & dads,  to have unsafe sex in the heat of the moment?

I read a book from behavioral economist Dan Ariely, called “Predictable Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions.”  He does interesting and amusing experiments about the ( irrational) way we make decisions for ourselves. Dan Ariely is convinced that we can change our decision making, based on his experiments.

See for yourself!

Nice video, really interesting experiments the man did.
Reminds me of an experiment I once saw in a video. It was about someone selling fresh orange juice on the marketplace. No matter how big the cups were, women kept taking the medium size, and men the large. So we don’t really know what we want, and make our decision depending on what the other options are..
